Human life has value.
The poor living in the gutter are as valuable as the rich living in a manor.
The scoundrel is no less valuable than the saint.
Because of this, every life a reaper takes must be redeemed.

Raven has lived by this first tenet since she was trained by her father to become a reaper. But since his death, she’s been spending years redeeming the lives she’s taken. By her count, she’s even and it’s time for that life to end. If she settles down and becomes a wife, she might just feel human again. But on the way to the life she thinks she wants, the baron of New Haven asks her to complete a task which she cannot ignore… Just when Raven decides to give up on her life as an assassin, she’s pulled right back in.

The Chronicles of Steele Raven is a steampunk-inspired fantasy set in an alternate universe.

"Human life has value. The poor living in the gutter are as valuable as the rich living in a manor. The scoundrel is no less valuable than the saint. Because of this, every life a reaper takes must be redeemed."

The first episode of the Chronicles of Steele gives a delightful introduction to this four-part series. The full version can also be read in Raven

Raven is a reaper, a trained assassin. For most of her life, she has known death all too well. However, she hasn't become immune to it. For every death, a life must be saved, serving as a sort of "penance" to those who had died before. The deaths by her hands will forever stain her mind. Now that her record is "even," she desires for a life of peace and quiet. But that time will not come because of a request made by a Baron to watch over his sick younger brother. In her attempts to escape the life she knew before, she finds herself being sucked back in.

This story hits the ground running, giving no time for the reader to ease into the story (which is good!) The pace continues to move quickly, flowing from one scene to the next. Steampunk elements sprinkle the plot, adding unique a modern twists to the tale. Need I mention the metal horses?

A few minor set-backs for me liking this story more were the lack of description and physical details of the characters and is a bit predictable.

Overall, it's verbally clean, action-packed, and has some meaning and purpose! It's a fun and quick read. There is some violence, but nothing too graphic.

My rating: 4 stars.

I really enjoyed getting to know the characters in this story. I am glad that I already have the additional episodes or the cliffhanger, even though fairly expected, would be somewhat frustrating. I am looking forward to seeing how Raven completes the task she has started and where the various relationships end up by the end of the series.

Sex - none
Language - none
Violence - a few battles with minor injuries but descriptions are minimal
Religion - one reference to the Christian God and a couple references to worship of a Wood Witch, also speculation that a boy is possessed by a demon
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
First I want to say that I'm not a steampunk kinda gal. I am a fantasy kind of gal, and Pauline Creeden has become one of my favorite authors this year. My love affair with her started with Abiding Flame, then went on to Santuary. This author doesn't stick with one genre like so many do. She continuously changes genres and does so absolutely flawlessly. From science fiction to post-apocalyptic and now to steampunk, she always does an incredible job of writing her stories and characters so that the reader falls in love with them.
The great part about this book, as short as it was, is that there were just enough fantasy elements in it that made me like it.
You had a heroine who didn't like the machinations of her steampunk world, and perferred a flesh and bone horse to one of the clanking, whizzing types.
You also have a boy who somehow sends all machines into absolute destruction and chaos whenever he has one of his episodes. That storyline itself made me continue to read, I need to get to the bottom of that.
I have fallen in love with this author, and hope others will read her books to see what an awesome writer she truly is.
No timid beginning. The book opens in action, and only gets better as it goes. This is only Episode 1; however, I am waiting at the edge my chair wondering what will happen next. This episode will definitely make you wanting more.

Episode 1 of The Chronicles begins with Raven, minding her own business, is thrust into the middle of chaos. She saves the royal heir only to find herself thrown into the dungeon. Her way out? Take a journey with Darius (the royal child she had saved) and finds herself, the boy, and his dog heading out on a journey to keep him safe from pending doom. Rather hard to keep a large dog quiet when walking on the crunchy leaves and fallen branches.

Take the trip and find out what is happening along the way. I find myself intrigued with wonder why her special friend, the newlywed doctor, smiles in all of the right places but Raven sees his inner struggle and wonders why.

Is all what appears, or what is she missing, if anything. See how each chapter gets your imagination running away with itself. This is a brilliant idea, an interesting topic, and very well written. The time has come, are you ready?
