One of my favorite premises (hero treats heroine badly, then makes up for it). Epic groveling here. Even though I read a lot of Romance, this was my first Harlequin. It may be my last. I expected better editing from a major publisher (weak sentences and lots of repeated words). When will I learn? At least it was only $4.99 and not the $7.99 some of them are asking, even for old books. Maybe my expectations were too high. I’d heard good things about this author. Good characters, though, with an interesting plot, and the ends were tied up nicely: redemption for all, and two secondary romances with satisfactory endings too. Maybe I’ll check out her non-Harlequin books.

Bride For A Night Mills Boon MB edition by Rosemary Rogers Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Rosemary Rogers was phoning it in when she wrote this junky romance that tries to fit into the Harlequin mold and loses most of her trademark energy as a result. The characters are paper thin and their motives hard to believe. I've read a number of her books, and this was the worst one I've come across.
Dragged a little toward the end. Somewhat predictable. Enjoyed Hugo who deserves his own book. Would like to follow the brother, too.
I bought the book on the recommendation that the writer is amazing and well worth it. The premise sounded pretty good and it flowed well, very fast paced... But that was also the fly in the ointment for me. While it was nice seeing Talia gain a back bone (Which truthfully she shoulda had sooner given the circumstances of her entering the social field *NEGATIVE*)it just sort of *flicked the switch* and Ta da!!! At that point she came off as a bit childish to me... probably had something to do with her timid nature in the beginning and this sudden *Rawr* Now listen here!!. And the main man... from the beginning his cruelties were half-hearted and it just seemed a bit foolish to me his pride and the like. I think I would've have liked them infinitely more with some pre-work leading up to their marriage then the main story, instead of an explanation mid-book "He always noticed her BUT..."

To me, in an attempt to bypass all the back story and jump to the action and the main body of events and their relationship it was glossed over with oddly placed explanations such as the one I pointed out (The "He always noticed her BUT...") and I think it robbed the complexities of the characters just a little bit, but as with all things perception is key and starting right before the marriage is what you get and need to fill in those gaps, especially with a happily ever after ending coming up.

I love a love story as much as the next gal and I was more interested in the French man who stole Talia away really. His romance story... THAT I would love to delve into much much deeper, it seemed like it has the all the complexities of class, and reputation, and love and pride. He was wishy-washy too... But I mean The moment they realized they loved one another but stuffing that away for more obvious reason!!! Ahh, but the story wasn't really about them.

As for the primary pair. It ended on a cute positive note, so its definitely worth the read, *I* just needed a bit more, hence the 3 stars!
It was ok
Silas Dobson a successful and wealthy merchant. The ton has shunned him in the aristocratic society. He doesn't have blue bloodline to be accepted in the upper class. Silas is a tyrant who forced his meek daughter Talia to attend the soirée to meet a suitor with a title. Silas will never pass as a gentleman. He's too willing to use his wealth to impose his daughter onto society.

In Talia's first season out, she was a wallflower with her dowry, who should have been offered marriage. Silas made arrangement with Harry Richardson, younger brother to the Earl of Ashcombe, but Harry jilted Talia at the altar. Silas had paid Harry a sum of money in advance to marry Talia. Silas blackmailed Gabriel, the Earl of Ashcombe, to either marry Talia or he would sue his brother Harry and notify every newspaper in England.

Gabriel inherited his father's title at the age of eighteen, along with the responsibilities of taking care of the estates, his mother and his brother Harry, who's in debt for gambling. When Gabriel accepted the title at eighteen, there were many who thought that they could take advantage of his inexperience; including several who claimed to be his friends. He could be a hard man, but he has a good heart and is loyal to those he considered to be his responsibility.

Gabriel and Talia were married at his townhouse. He bedded, making sure their marriage was consummated. The next day, Gabriel sent Talia to the country. A month later, Talia was kidnapped by a French spy who disguised himself as Vicar Jack. Jack kidnapped Talia, Countess of Ashcombe, to France and held her prisoner. Gabriel, the Earl of Ashcome, received word that his wife is being held captive in France by a French spy. Gabriel left England to rescue his wife.

Bride for a Night was compelling with an additional turn of trying to leave France with so much action in the midst of things. Talia and Gabriel were two lovely people who developed throughout the book. Talia was no longer the introverted person she was at the beginning of the book. Talia grew to be an independent young lady of the ton.

The secondary characters Hannah and Hugo, Lord Rothwell. It would be nice to have their story.

I recommend!
I haven't read a Rosemary Rogers book in a very long time. She started me off in the early 70s and I've always had a soft spot for her, but I had tired of these kinds of stories. I'm not sure why I decided to give this book a chance, but I'm glad I did. Once our heroine, Talia, began to feel more confident and became a stronger character, I really began to enjoy the story. It was funny in places, hot in others. I feel that Ms. Rogers left an opening to write another book with the secondary characters and I am looking forward to seeing if she does actually write their story. The hero was a bit of silly boy, but all that was explained and he did actually grow up as the story went along. All in all, I'm glad I read the book.
One of my favorite premises (hero treats heroine badly, then makes up for it). Epic groveling here. Even though I read a lot of Romance, this was my first Harlequin. It may be my last. I expected better editing from a major publisher (weak sentences and lots of repeated words). When will I learn?
